OBJECTIVES:
1. Review statistics related to the burden of chronic illness, and how the lack of adherence impacts disease burden and health expenditures.
2. Recognize the factors related to nonadherence.
3. Discuss the dimensions of engagement from the patient’s perspective.
4. Explain communication and engagement strategies that improve the patient experience.
5. Analyze how improved access to care reduces ethical concerns with health disparities.
6. Define the strategies to support outpatient care and engagement with primary care.
7. Recall resources to improve adherence and patient outcomes.
